What does your farm name mean to you? How did you choose this name?
We choose J & K Meats when my wife and I got married. It stands for James and Kaylee!
Where is your farm located? How many miles do you travel to reach Common Ground?
Our farm is located in Greenup, Illinois, 50 miles from Common Ground.
What do you raise? What is your signature product?
We raise beef, pork, turkey, chicken, lamb and goat. Our signature product would be meat in general. That’s what we focus on, taking care of our animals and supplying quality product.
For how long have you been farming?
We have been in business with J & K Meats for 5 years. We have been farming crops and livestock for 4 generations.
Where do you get the ingredients for your products?
We do all of our processing at Das Schlaught Haus in Arthur, Illinois.
How do you describe your farming practices?
All of our farming techniques and livestock handling is done naturally.
What do you enjoy most about farming?
A big part of why we enjoy farming is for our children, to teach them the right way to treat animals and to enjoy each others company. Farming is a way of life for us, we couldn’t imagine life without it.
What do you find most challenging about farming?
The weather is the most challenging part of farming for us.
What is your philosophy/perspective on local farming and agriculture?
Local farming is important to us because we believe it encourages community and reinforces customer knowledge about where their food comes from and how it is raised.
Is there anything else you'd like Common Ground's customers to know about your farm?
We are a 4 generation family farm. We raise all of our products including feed, hay, crops and animals. All of our products are free range, antibiotic and hormone free, and happy!
