Right now is the perfect time to enjoy a crisp, cool, refreshing salad. We love making salads with the fresh, organic produce from our local vendors. Whether it's a salad from our grab'n'go, salad bar, or a salad made at home, we've highlighted some of our favorites! 

Common Ground Grab'n'Go Salads

Our Deli Grab'n'Go case is brimming daily with housemade salads that are satisfying, delicious and nutritious. All three salads pair very nicely together. 

Peanut Sesame Noodle Salad:

  • Spaghetti noodles complement the crunch of carrot and cabbage while tofu balances the spiciness.
  • Spaghetti noodles are a complex carbohydrate that the body can digest slowly, thus extending the amount of energy you have throughout the day.
  • Raw red cabbage is high in fiber
  • Garlic is a natural antioxidant and ginger is well known for increasing blood circulation and digestion s
  • Try the Peanut Sesame Noodle Salad before working out. With just the right amount of heat to make you sweat and is hearty enough to tide you over until dinner. 


Cajun Spiced Tofu Salad:

  • Tender cubes of tofu pair perfectly with the fresh crunch of celery and carrots. With green italian parsley and red onion create a flavor that pops alongside tamari, sesame oil, curry powder, paprika, cajun spices, chili powder, veganese and lemon juice blending to culminate a most unique vegan dish.
  • Tofu has long been revered for its health benefits and nutrients including amino acids, iron and calcium.
  • This vegan dish makes for a delicious and quick lunchtime entree.

Kickin' Kale Salad:

  • Kale, crunchy carrots and bell peppers, sesame seeds, almonds and green onion mixed drizzled with tamari and tahini- if you want to eat something that's going to give your being a boost- eat this.
  • Kale is absolutely skyrocketing with nutrition which includes iron, vitamin K, antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, fiber, calcium, sulfer and folate.
  • Red bell peppers are full of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. Almonds have riboflavin and L-carnitine which is great for brain function.
  • Add this healthy salad to your lunch or take a container home for a nutritious addition to dinner.

Make Your Own Salad Creation

Jacqueline's Grain Salad: 

Here are a few suggestions from our GM on how to make a cool summer grain salad.

Choose from the following:
Grain: almost any whole grain works, these are the best! Millet, Rice, Quinoa 
Protein: any bean, nut, or crumbly cheese, here are some ideas! Black beans, Chickpeas, Lentils
Veggie or a fruit: throw together any of your favs! Cherry tomatoes, steamed broccoli, fresh spinach, raisins, bell peppers
Oil: use your favorite healthful oil or substitute yogurt if it feels right! Olive oil, walnut oil, sesame oil
Tart/sour note: Rice vinegar, cider vinegar, balsamic vinegar

Then add your favorite spices and mix well! Don’t be afraid to experiment or look for exciting flavor combination ideas at on-line recipe sites! 

Classic Salads with a Twist

Mediterranean Chicken Salad: Fresh ingredients and bright flavor make this salad refreshing on a spring day. Cherry tomatoes, kalamatas, dried currants and capers bring life to orzo and the star of the show-- chicken.

Mint Potato Salad: With less than ten ingredients this version of potato salad pairs great with grilled fish or chicken. 

Butter Lettuce Salad with Gorgonzola and Pear Dressing: This easy-to-make lettuce salad is a flavor combination that taste buds must experience! Blue Cheese, tangy dijon mustard, white balsamic vinegar and lemon juice along with sweet pear make for a lettuce salad that's unique and beautiful.

Local Herbs

We also love green, leafy basil leaves and think they make an excellent addition to many Mediterranean salads. Local Green Pantry Nursery herbs are great for just that.

The story of Green Pantry Nursery is truly a testament to our 4th end, which is our local food chain is equitable, robust, and environmentally sound. When Green Pantry approached Common Ground in 2012 about carrying their herbs in our store, we worked together to help create packaging, case sizes, labeling, barcodes for their herbs.
