Local Profile with Green Pantry Nursery

What does your farm name mean to you? How did you choose this name?

We wanted a name that describes what we are doing/providing. “Green” tells of fresh herbs, “Pantry” speaks of food products, “Nursery” lets the customer know that we are growing our herbs that we sell.

Where is your operation located? How many miles do you travel to reach Common Ground? How many people work with you?

We are located in the country between Arthur and Tuscola and 35 miles from the Common Ground Coop. At the present we are 3 of us working to provide fresh herbs to our community.

What do you produce/grow/raise? What is your signature product?

We are growing 10 different varieties of herbs. Sweet basil is what we grow the most of, but we also grow chives, dill, mint, oregano, rosemary, sage, tarragon, thyme, and thai basil.

For how long have you been growing food?

We have grown a large garden for more than 30 years, but started the herb business in 2011.

Is the farm your full-time or part-time job? If full-time, how was the transition?

It takes most of our time to keep ahead of the maintaining the plants, cutting, packaging, and delivering.

Where do you get your seeds?

We get our seeds from a variety of sources, including Stokes Seeds, Hummerts, and others.

Do you use organic or fair trade (natural) growing practices?

We are committed to organic/natural practices,  using OMRI (organic) labeled sprays, and without the use of weed chemicals in our growing beds.

What do you enjoy most about your business?

One of the most rewarding part of growing herbs, is being able to provide a fresh product to our customers and seeing their appreciation.

What do you find most challenging about farming?

It is a constant battle that we are in against disease, insects, and keeping our soil balanced which makes for a lush healthy plant, especially in the winter.

Is there anything else you'd like Common Ground's customers to know about your operation?

We have our email address on our product labels, and we would really appreciate having input from our customers to help us know if we could do something that would improve our products.
